Area Rug Repair & Restoration
California Rug Cleaning repairs and restores area rugs by hand at our facility in Canoga Park. We reweave holes, rebuild fringe and edges, resize rugs and restore worn pile on Persian, Oriental, wool, silk and antique rugs. Every repair is quoted individually, and the estimate is free.
How Rug repair is Priced
Repair Type
Priced By
Fringe repair and replacement
Fringe is the foundation warp coming through the end of the rug, so once it wears away the rug starts coming apart from the end in.
Foot
Selvage and edge repair
The side cords carry the weight every time a rug is moved, and a frayed edge keeps unraveling into the body of the rug if it is left.
Foot
Repairing holes and moth damage
Holes are rebuilt knot by knot in matched wool at the original knot count, so the repair sits level with the pile around it.
Sq. Inch
Rug resizing and cutting
A rug can be cut down to fit a room or around a hearth, then finished with a new edge so the cut does not read as a cut.
Job
Shearing and pile restoration
Matted or uneven pile can be sheared level again, which evens out wear paths and brings the pattern back up.

Rugs we repair
Our area rug repair approach is tailored to each rug’s fibers, construction, and condition, so the work respects the way it was made.
Persian
Repaired knot by knot, matching the original count, with fringe repaired from the foundation threads, not just the visible edge.
Oriental
Repaired according to the rug’s weave, dyes, and construction, with damaged areas carefully rebuilt to blend with the surrounding pattern.
Wool
Holes and worn areas are rewoven with matching wool, while fraying edges are rebound to protect the rug’s structure.
Silk
These delicate fibers are rewoven with silk matched for color, texture, and sheen, following the rug’s original pattern and fine weave.
Antique
Assessed for dry rot, weak foundations, and past repairs before restoration begins, with each repair guided by the rug’s condition.
Our Rug Repair Process
No two rug repairs are exactly alike. The work itself changes from job to job. What does not change is how we get there. Every rug goes through the same six steps, from the first look to the final check, so you know the price and the plan before anything is touched.
When you bring in your rug, we identify its fibers, foundation, knot count, and construction so the repair can match the way it was made. Fringe and edge damage is measured by the linear foot, and holes or tears by the square inch and we also check nearby areas for less obvious wear.
You get a price before any work begins, along with what we plan to do and what the result will realistically look like. If a repair will be visible rather than invisible, we say so now. Nothing starts until you have agreed to it.
We source wool or silk that matches the original in weight and texture, then dye it to match the color as it looks today rather than as it looked new. Matching to a faded color is what makes a repair disappear, and it is the step most often skipped.
The work is done by hand at our facility. Holes are rewoven knot by knot, fringe is rebuilt into the foundation rather than sewn on top, edges are wrapped by hand, and cuts are finished with a new edge. Hand time is most of what a repair costs.
Once the work is done we check the repair under proper lighting, from both sides and from a normal standing distance. The pile is groomed back into its natural direction, and the rug is wrapped for pickup or delivery.
