Our Rug Cleaning Specialties
California Rug Cleaning handles every type of area rug, including machine-made, flatweave, shag, hide and runners. The five below are the ones that need a specialist’s judgment rather than a standard wash, and they are what the facility is built around.
Persian
Hand-knotted, with fringe that’s structural rather than decorative, and dyes tested before any water touches them.
Oriental
Turkish, Chinese, Indian, Caucasian: construction and dye chemistry vary enormously, and so does what a rug can safely take.
Wool
Where most rug damage actually happens. Hot water and harsh detergent strip the lanolin and shrink the foundation.
Silk
The least forgiving fiber for a rug. These rugs are given the most gentle treatment, washed and finished entirely by hand.
Antique
An antique rug’s condition guides every decision. We identify dry rot, weakened areas, and old repairs before selecting a cleaning method.
Specialized solutions for your rug care needs
Every rug problem has its own cause and its own solution. Whether it’s a fresh spill or years of built-up soil, we’ll look at what your rug needs and recommend the right treatment. Contact us with your rugs details for a free quote.

Urine salts stay in the fibers and reactivate whenever the air gets humid, which is why the smell keeps returning until they are flushed out.
Mold can establish in wet wool within a couple of days and dyes migrate while the rug sits damp, so the sooner we collect it the more we can save.
Soot is acidic and bonds to the fiber as it cools, so removing the smell takes a separate deodorizing stage on top of the wash.
Wine, coffee, ink and rust all behave differently, and we will tell you honestly which will come out before you commit to anything.
A better rug cleaning process
Area rugs need more than a quick pass with a carpet-cleaning wand. Surface cleaning may improve their appearance, but it can leave grit deep in the foundation . At our facility, we take your rug through a complete cleaning process that goes beyond the surface, removing hidden buildup and bringing out its natural beauty.
Before cleaning begins, we measure, photograph, and carefully inspect your rug. We identify its fibers and construction, document existing damage or repairs, and look for weak areas that may require special care. If we find anything that affects how the rug can be safely cleaned, we let you know before moving forward.
Some rug dyes can bleed or migrate when exposed to water. This may be caused by unstable dyes, over-dyeing, heat exposure, or improper previous cleaning. We test the colors before washing and use the results to choose the safest cleaning method for your rug.
A rug can hold a surprising amount of grit deep within its foundation, even when the surface looks only slightly dull. Before adding water, we use specialized equipment to loosen and remove this embedded dry soil. Skipping this step can turn trapped grit into mud, leaving the rug stiff and preventing a truly thorough cleaning.
Stains, odors, and other problem areas are treated individually before washing. Each treatment is selected according to the rug’s fibers and the source of the problem, then given time to work. Pet urine and odor contamination receive specialized treatment at this stage.
Your rug is washed by hand in cool water with a mild, pH-appropriate cleaning solution. Gentle agitation lifts soil from the pile and foundation without exposing the rug to unnecessary heat or harsh detergents. The process is slow and deliberate because protecting the rug matters as much as getting it clean.
We rinse the rug until the water runs clear and the cleaning solution has been fully removed. This matters because detergent residue can attract new soil and quickly dull the pile. Controlled extraction then removes most of the water before drying begins.
Depending on its age, fibers, and construction, the rug is dried flat or suspended in a controlled environment with carefully managed airflow. Drying too slowly can lead to odors, mold, and uneven shrinkage, while overly aggressive drying can damage the fibers. Controlled conditions help the rug dry safely and evenly.
Once dry, the pile is groomed in its natural direction, and the fringes are cleaned and combed by hand. We then inspect the entire rug under proper lighting to confirm the results before wrapping it for pickup or delivery.
